JULY 2023 EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: MARIA MEJIA

Any custodial worker knows they are more than "just" a janitor-- and we agree!

At Accurate Building Maintenance, our team members are the backbone of our business and the heartbeat of our #purpose: creating clean, healthy, safe communities.

They take care of our customers, so we take care of them like family-- the best kind! We are so grateful for all they do each day. We love to see them grow and succeed, and it’s our privilege to recognize them for their dedication.

Our monthly Employee Spotlight series features one of our amazing team members, showcasing what it’s like to work in the cleaning industry at Accurate, where we #keepitfun. This month we are happy to introduce you to Maria Mejia in Las Vegas!

Maria has been with Accurate for 5 years and supervises two of our buildings. She was nominated for her wonderful attitude, reliability, and being an exceptionally hard worker and an amazing supervisor.

I had the pleasure of getting to know more about Maria as both a person and a professional during our recent Question & Answer session. Read on to be inspired and impressed!

WHAT OTHERS HAD TO SAY ABOUT MARIA

Accurate's managers and leadership team aptly called Maria "the perfect candidate" for our Employee Spotlight. Their glowing feedback clearly shows why!

"Maria is always willing to go above and beyond and help anytime she can. She is always friendly to our clients and all of the workers, including security, in her buildings. I receive compliments about Maria from everyone I come across in her buildings to this day, and she's been here 5 years. -Bonnie Miller, Director of Workplace and Employee Experience
Maria (right) and her crew receive thanks and treats from Accurate's client during National Cleaning Week.

“I remember my first hands-on experience working with Maria during the COVID pandemic. My first thought was, 'She is fast, and I am never going to keep up with her!' She can run circles around people while completing the job thoroughly. She always has a smile on her face. She is grateful and humble. I have watched her grow and improve her leadership skills, including learning and improving on English as a second language.” -Alex Finken, CEO/Visionary

Maria's supervisor Bonnie Miller said, "Not only is Maria funny and easy to talk to (even with Google Translate), but she is a down-to-business girl! She is a stickler for details and trains all employees that come her way to be great janitors. You will never find her or her crew out of uniform or sneaking a break! She is one of the hardest workers in our company and takes so much pride in her buildings!"

“Maria is not only an excellent supervisor, she's totally delightful to be around.” -Michael Milner, Area Supervisor

WHAT MARIA HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE JANITORIAL INDUSTRY AND WORKING AT ACCURATE

What is the best career lesson you've learned so far? Work brings various opportunities and growth in every way, if you know how to take advantage of them! It's important to wear the uniform of the company you represent, since you're also representing yourself in your workplace. That is why we must perform our tasks the best of our ability as a team, enjoying what we do every day. Find a way to enjoy what you do. Your work shift goes by quickly when you work hard and have fun!
A harmonious work environment is important to Maria. Accurate's 5 Core Values help make that a reality!

What keeps you motivated at work?

Having a good team with very hardworking and fun colleagues (each with their own unique personality)! This fills our workplace with harmony. Another thing is having the necessary materials to be able to perform the work effectively.

Maria's delight in being provided the tools necessary to do her job well has endeared her to the Accurate team. "I have never seen someone so happy to receive cleaning supplies! Maria gets so excited when we bring her something so small, that it makes us want to give her one item a day just to see her beautiful smile!" said Bonnie Miller.

What is your WHY of being a cleaning industry professional? In other words—what brings you to work each day besides needing to earn a paycheck? Because it is something we do every day at home. However, cleaning also requires skill, effort, attention, and a good attitude towards it!

What is the toughest challenge you've had at work? One of the biggest challenges was during the pandemic. I'm very committed to Accurate and taking care of all the people that work in the two buildings I supervise. Their employees trusted us to make sure their workspaces were disinfected and clean, so they could perform their work with confidence and be assured of their safety.

What is the best career advice you have ever received? Wherever you work, you have to put on your uniform and do it in the best possible way-- whatever it is-- until the last moment.

Describe your fellow Accurate team members in three words.

Hardworking, respectful, and fun.

Which of Accurate’s core values resonates most with you and why? (Keep It Fun, Opportunity, Respect, Solutions, and We Keep Our Word) All of them! Because I believe that as long as these values exist in the workplace, we will always have a good team that gives good results.
Maria Mejia: Role Model and Class Act

What advice would you give to new hires at Accurate? That they have a willingness to learn, perform their work with expertise, and keep a good attitude when doing it. Since you spend a lot of time with your coworkers, they become your second family. That's why we must create a harmonious environment that allows us to feel comfortable at work.

Which team members are your biggest inspiration at Accurate? I believe that every member of a team has something that inspires their coworkers. But in this case, Mr. Ron Finken* is my inspiration-- for being a great leader. *Accurate's Co-Founder
