WHAT JUAN HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE JANITORIAL INDUSTRY AND WORKING AT ACCURATE
What's your "why" on being a cleaning and maintenance industry professional? What brings you to work each day at this job, besides needing to earn a paycheck? There are a few reasons. I like fixing things, I like organization and making things tidy and orderly. I do maintenance now at [the school], but I consider myself "a floor man." I started out in the 1990s when a friend asked me to give him a hand with his business, and I learned how to do all the floor work. I like the before and after. When I lived in Miami, a cleaning company hired me as a day porter, but it was more of a maintenance position. The person I replaced trained me. I also like the people I work with— my immediate supervisor (Facilities Manager Coatney P.), the school's administrators Dr. G. and Dr. B., and the two Accurate day porters. It's a great environment.

What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most? The satisfaction of getting things repaired, of seeing floors go from really bad condition to really great condition when I’m done. I take pride in my skill and ability. In this country, you have to have some sort of trade unless you only want to make minimum wage.
What would you do for work if you weren't doing this job? I see myself doing something in the same scope; some type of service, dealing with customers, getting to meet or exceed people’s expectations, to fulfill a necessity for them. I like to be of service in a practical way.
What's your favorite thing about working at Accurate? The leadership and office staff are helpful and accessible. At this company, we work at a specific location, so your assigned work site has more impact on the day-to-day for crew members. I'm very happy at the school.
What is a skill do you think everyone should learn? Communication is key in life.
What is the toughest challenge you've had at work?
Encountering floors that were damaged beyond any hope of restoration or improvement. It can be frustrating, but you have to know when you've done everything you can, and then communicate to the customer that they either have to accept it as is, or replace it. Maintenance is a bit different; you see a hole in the wall, you can patch it and paint it. But if an equipment motor is burned up, you've got to get a new one.
Which of Accurate's core values is most important to you, and why? We Keep Our Word, Respect, Opportunity, Solutions, and Keep It Fun RESPECT is the most important to me. I also appreciate that Accurate's leadership not only treats all of us with respect but expects our customers to do so as well, and holds them accountable if they don't. I've personally seen that in action by our CEO, Alex. That really means a lot to me and others on the crew.
When I worked at a casino in the past, one night there was a gambling customer with his own table spending a lot of money. He treated one of the other workers so horribly— yelled at and belittled him, and the supervisor did nothing to stand up for the employee. Later, I asked the supervisor why he didn't. His response was basically, "I can't. He’s a high roller, he spends a lot of money, we can’t make him mad. We can’t lose the business." It was so disheartening. I don't respect that approach and mindset in management. Many people don't feel they can stand up for themselves in that kind of situation, because they need to keep their job.
I’m the kind of person who, if you treat me badly and talk to me nastily, I don’t just get over that. I will not tolerate it. I work where I am respected, and I give that respect to everyone else.

Who is someone you admire at Accurate? Rodrigo Palacios, one of our floor techs— he is a very hard worker, always goes above and beyond, works with excellence, doesn't cut corners, and takes pride in his work. And our other floor techs, Herberth Quintanilla and Jaime Chavez, are great.
What's the most awkward or embarrassing thing that's happened to you at work? One night doing floor work at another school, I bumped into a trophy, and it fell and broke. We're always so careful, so when an accident like that happens, you feel awful. It was like it happened in slow motion— I saw it start to fall, but I couldn't get to it fast enough.
WHAT JUAN SHARED ABOUT HIMSELF
How do you define success? I see success differently than what most people seem to consider as the "status quo," which is acquiring wealth and items. To me, it’s how much you can enjoy every moment in your life, for the little things.
I lost my dad several years ago. He was such a happy man, especially in the morning. My dad would say things like, “I was the first one to get the newspaper this morning" or "I had such a great cup of coffee today.” I now look back and see that my dad was like the richest man in the world.
How much do you enjoy your life on a daily basis? I look forward to the next morning I wake up, the next cup of coffee I have, the next evening I come home after work and eat dinner with my wife. Peace, contentment. You can have a nice car and a beautiful house— those things are fine and even good, but they don’t matter the most.
What is something unique about you?
I’m a loyal person. If somebody does something for me, especially in a tough moment in my life, I will never forget that. I will always remember that. Loyalty is everything. If I lose trust for someone, it's over for me relationship-wise. I can still interact and work with them on a surface level if needed, but that’s it.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to watch sumo wrestling, horse racing, and drag racing (NHRA). John Force is my favorite drag racer. I also like the others on his team— his daughter Brittany Force and Austin Prock. I enjoy good restaurants. Asian food is one of my favorites.

What is your greatest accomplishment? What are you most proud of in your life? My daughter, Gabriella. I’m proud that I overcame a lot to be part of her life. After her mother and I separated, there were challenges that made it hard for me to stay in contact with her. At one point, I had to fight just to be present and have a relationship with her. It wasn’t the situation I expected, but I’m not the kind of person who just walks away. We talk often, and she spends Christmas with me every year.
What is a talent or ability you wish you had?
Painting or drawing. My dad was a very talented artist. He was particularly good at drawing cartoon figures and people’s faces. He was a very special person in his own way.
If cost wasn’t a factor, where would you like to travel?
France— not Paris, but Léon, where my grandfather was born. And definitely Greece.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
To go to the Kentucky Derby.

Tell us about your family. My wife, Kathy, and I are very happy together! She's very sweet to me. We've been together for six years and are about to celebrate our two-year wedding anniversary. I love dogs, especially pit bulls, and have had several dogs in the past. Right now we just have my wife's cat. I grew up in a big family in Venezuela. I have two brothers, but both my parents have passed away. I always had a very close relationship with my mom.
What is your favorite family tradition or holiday? In my home country of Venezuela, Christmas and New Year's were everything to us. A special tradition was making hallacas, which is like a tamale wrapped in plantain leaves. The neat thing was how we made them together, like an assembly line— one person would lay out the leaves, another would add the masa, someone else would fold them, and another person tied them. We even had new clothes specifically for that day.
How has your background shaped the way you view life today? I left Venezuela when I was 16 years old, before Communism came to my country and destroyed it. At the time, Hugo Chávez was still in jail; about five years later, he was elected president. As his leadership took hold, I watched from afar as everything began to change. My parents and many extended family members still lived there, and I saw what they went through— the shortages, the fear, the way daily life became harder and harder.
In the U.S., the conversation around "right versus left" can be very polarizing and divisive. I recognize that most people care deeply about others and believe in fairness, which I respect. I have a different perspective, because for me, it’s not a concept or a debate. I didn’t live it directly, but I watched my parents and others I love suffer through it. It was devastating.
I could go to the supermarket and buy anything I wanted to eat, but my own mother and father couldn't eat meat; even if I sent them money, there was nowhere they could obtain it. My mother worked her whole life and didn’t have medical insurance. The "free” medical care they offer was at a place where basically everything had been destroyed, and you had to bring your own medicine and other items to be treated.
It’s not about sides or politics. It’s about what I’ve seen happen to people I love.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?
Jamie Foxx. I would have chosen Chris Rock or Will Smith—before the controversy, when their character still matched their talent.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?
I like spy movies and series— the Jason Bourne saga is one of my favorites, and on TV, The Day of the Jackal and Slow Horses. Shōgun is a historical drama set in 17th century Japan. I also like the TV series Succession.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Listen to yourself. Trust your gut, trust your instincts.
Listen to other people and learn what you can from them. I think a question that almost everyone asks themselves is, "How much different would my life be if I had the knowledge I do now, back then?" My daughter just turned 18. I told her, "Look, you can learn everything the hard way, or you can try to take in advice from others who have already lived it."
Do you collect anything?
No. I actually don’t like the feeling of collecting, because there would always be a missing piece, something else I'd need to complete it.
What was the first thing you bought with your own money? It was the 1990s! So I bought a pair of Timberland hiking boots at Burdines, a Florida department store chain (later bought by Macy's).
What is your favorite quote, catch phrase, or motto that you say often? Hagan bien y no miren a quién. ("Do good and don't look at who.") There was a sketch TV show in my country in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and the presenter, Miguel Ángel Landa, always ended it with this phrase. For me, it means, "Do good by people, no matter who they are— because that reflects who YOU are, the kind of person you choose to be."

Author’s Note: This well-known phrase was a trademark sign-off from renowned Venezuelan actor and host Miguel Ángel Landa, who closed every episode of the popular variety show Bienvenidos with the line. It’s widely embraced in Latin culture as a call to kindness—an invitation to act with generosity and integrity, regardless of someone’s status, identity, or behavior.
If you could meet or interview one person (dead or alive), who would it be?
I’m fascinated with the 1960s and 1970s, so it would definitely be somebody from that era: Marvin Gaye. I would’ve loved to get inside that guy’s head. Think about it; he was super famous, super talented, and ended up almost homeless after going through depression, drug problems, and financial trouble. After some time away, he managed to recreate his success but eventually fell back into addiction. His own father ended up shooting him during an argument tied to all that. I’d want to know his story. The things he did musically in that time were really innovative.
You have to sing at karaoke. What song do you pick?
"Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down.
