WHAT RANDY HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE JANITORIAL INDUSTRY AND WORKING AT ACCURATE
What's your WHY on being a cleaning industry professional? In other words, what brings you to work at this job each day besides needing to earn a paycheck?
My parents owned a cleaning company in Bakersville, California, when I was a teenager, so I was kind of brought up in the industry and had a knack for it anyway. I had a buddy that worked at the high school here in Ely, but he resigned, so when I heard there was an open position I applied. I started the first day of school last year. It’s hard work, but I like the satisfaction that comes along with it. I know the importance of this work with having a clean and disinfected school, especially after COVID.
What keeps you motivated at work? The staff and kids are great at the school. I fist bump all the kids and hold the doors open for them. It’s a small town up here; a small town atmosphere where everyone knows each other, is supportive of and appreciative of each other, and the students and staff are, too. We're familiar with one another, on a first-name basis; friendly. I enjoy the relationships and connections with people. I have students that help me out of the blue all the time; it shows character. One of my favorite things to do is help out at the sporting events, and they rely on me for set up; it’s not a necessity, but I show up early and set up all the coolers, make sure it looks good and that the teams have their equipment and other needs. I take pride in making sure everything is ready to go for sporting events.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your work?
How difficult it really is to do every single day. It really is a difficult job, and it takes skill. It’s way more than just scrubbing toilets and taking out the trash.
What part of your job do you enjoy the most? Seeing the appreciation from the kids and the staff— because they’ll write us letters and post them on our office doors. I hear things like, "You always want to volunteer and contribute to the community in many ways. No one has ever really done it this way before, and we really appreciate that you do."
What skill do you think everyone should learn? Time and task management; how to delegate your time effectively.
What is the best piece of work-related advice you've ever received? Do what makes you happy, you know? I know that sounds kind of cliché. But I’m happy to go to work every day; I’m happy to do it. A lot of people ask me every day, "How can you do this every day?" I say, "I’m happy to do it." I’ve done so many other jobs, and I am truly content. It's like that saying, "Love what you do for work, and you’ll never work a day in your life."
What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this job? I’ve always wanted to learn how to drive big rigs, so I could be paid to travel the United States.
Which of your team members at Accurate do you admire the most? My night shift guy at the high school, Taylor Turner. Whenever we do things together, he’s fun to work with, we always get things done and accomplish our task at hand. I can always lean on him to get things done fast and well. We work really well together.
What's your favorite thing about working at Accurate? The support that this company gives to its employees. How they have our employees’ back completely and we always receive recognition. I love coming to Vegas for the get-togethers. Corporate comes up here to Ely to our meetings, and we can call them if there’s an issue. I’ve never had any issues with being able to get information I need; leadership is always one phone call away. I’ve been with a lot of companies, and this is the first one I’ve worked for that has truly gone above and beyond for their employees.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you at work? Finishing waxing the gym and then accidentally stepping in it! Alex [Gledhill] had just gotten done putting a layer of wax on the main gym floor, and thankfully he was able to cover it up—embarrassing moment.
WHAT RANDY SHARED ABOUT HIMSELF
How do you define success? Overcoming unique challenges that I wouldn’t think I would be able to. Honestly, every day is a success to me.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
Hiking and camping. My wife and I hike in our off time; we're in the "100 miles per year" club. We go to Lake Tahoe a lot and there's a national park basically around the corner. Every weekend on Sunday, we go out and hike a couple of miles—it sets us up for staying active on the job.
What topic could you give a 20-minute presentation on without any preparation?
Navigation in the wilderness; map reading. I taught map reading classes in high school. I rely on those skills when I hike.
What's one thing on your bucket list? To get my waterfall badge by hiking 50 waterfalls in one year. I think we’ve only done 15 in one year so far. I think the only way we could accomplish that is to go to Southern Oregon and work our way through the Highway of Waterfalls (the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, aka Highway 138). We’d have to take three weeks off of work, so it’s not on the immediate agenda. We’ll probably have to wait for retirement for that.
Where do you like to travel or vacation?
Lake Tahoe and the Oregon Coast.
What TV show, movie, books, or podcasts do you love? I listen to a lot of podcasts— The Dan Bongino Show, for example. Recently I’ve been trying to stay away from TV and screens.
"A Show That’s Not Immune to the Facts
The Dan Bongino Show tackles the biggest political issues, debunking both liberal and conservative establishment rhetoric."
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I always wanted to learn how to fly a helicopter, but you've got to be good at math to know how to fly, and I'm not the greatest at it.
Tell us about your family now (pets included). I have eight kids, and most of them are grown and moved on. I live at home with my wife and my teenager. I have three Chihuahuas and my cats.
What are you most proud of in your life? Watching my kids grow up to be successful and happy, and having a happy marriage. I think that’s what I’m most proud of.
What job did you want to have when you were a kid?
I was really serious about wanting to be a firefighter until I was about 12, and I started thinking about girls. Then I was distracted.
What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
When I was growing up in California, I was really into the skateboarding scene. I bought myself and all of my friends new skateboards.
What is your #1 pet peeve?
People saying they will do something and then they don’t (no follow through). Especially at work. Someone says, “I’ll handle it,” and then I get a text that it didn’t get done—I promised them; I said my guy would handle it. That frustrates me, because it makes us look so unprofessional. I tell my guys: It doesn’t matter how good you’ve done for the past year. Right now, today, is what matters; the customer cares about right now. That’s one thing I learned from my parents running their janitorial business as I was growing up.
If you could see anything achieved in the world, what would you want to see? The end of racial division. I think that’s something that is tearing everyone apart, or at least what certain people/groups want everyone to think is tearing us apart.
You’re happiest when____ (fill in the blank).
I’m sitting below giant sequoias, listening to the wind go through the trees.
If given a chance, who would you be for one day?
Elon Musk. I’m just curious to know what goes through that man’s brain, how a genius thinks... what makes him tick.
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? I’ve never really thought about that. I’m not sure. I’m content with my job. I like it. I don’t know what else I would rather do.
Do you collect anything?
Hot Wheels. I've got my fantasy garage going on pretty well. I lost count of how many I have a long time ago.
If you were stuck on an island, what three things would you bring?
I’d bring my wife, my Reader's Digest, and a fishing pole.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you? Keanu Reeves. Always calm, cool, and collected in the worst of circumstances.
What is something others may be surprised to know about you?
This one's for Bubba (Ely Area Manager): I'm still learning how to fish... which is a rarity up here.
What is the most important thing you've learned in the last 5 years?
Family first, not money.
What advice would you give to your 13-year-old self? 1) Save your money. 2) Don’t be so hard on yourself. 3) Never give up.
If you were an animal, what would you be?
A bear. Because I feel like they’re just really good at surviving.
What is one of your favorite family memories or stories?
Speaking of bears, we were at Kings Beach in Oregon with my boy when he was about 12 years old. He came out of the restroom, and there was a bear standing on the beach. My son said, "Hi, Bear!" And the bear was just nonchalantly walking around, like it was no big deal to be on the public beach. We didn’t know how to react. It was the neatest thing.
