In the words of coworkers, customers, and friends
For more than seven years, Duane Harris has taken care of people and places as part of the Accurate team. Along the way, both coworkers and customers came to know and love him as a trusted friend. As Duane receives hospice care, they are sharing the words they want him to hear now.

We often wait until someone is gone to gather the memories and say the things we wish we'd said sooner. We don't want to wait with Duane.
This Honor Spotlight is different from our usual Employee Spotlights. Duane was not interviewed for it. Instead, part of his story is told by Accurate coworkers and customer team members who first knew him through his job, and then through the laughs, conversations, and friendships that followed.
Duane has never enjoyed having his picture taken. The one photo included in this article comes from an employee shout-out in January 2024. Fortunately, the people who know him have given us a much fuller picture through their words.
As this article began coming together, Accurate's Director of Workplace and Employee Experience, Bonnie Miller, started sending the full customer messages to Duane individually. After reading the first notes, he replied:
“Thank you. I love that. It almost made me cry. Those people really are my friends, true friends. I love them all!” –Duane Harris, Accurate Crew Member, upon reading the messages from our customers
The messages led to a longer text conversation than Bonnie and Duane had been able to share in some time. They brought out a familiar spark. “Tonight he was back, if only for a brief time," Bonnie said.
As Bonnie has continued sending the messages that have poured in, Duane has told her how grateful he is and how much the notes lift his spirits. For Bonnie, it has been meaningful to see those words bring him comfort and help him feel loved, especially on days when he is feeling so unwell.
And while Duane said the messages almost made him cry, Bonnie is certain they did—tears of joy from hearing, in people’s own words, how much he means to them. That is why we are sharing these words now.
From the Accurate Team
Duane joined Accurate in early 2019 through a family friend who believed he deserved another opportunity. Accurate CEO and Visionary Alex Finken remembers sensing something genuine in him immediately.
“When I think of Duane, the first word that comes to mind is heart. From the moment I met Duane, I knew I could trust him. I believed he would have our backs, just as we would have his—and that’s exactly what happened.” -Alex Finken, Accurate CEO & Visionary, Las Vegas
Duane is a trusted and valued member of the Accurate team. He is also someone our customers genuinely look forward to seeing. They notice when he is not there. They miss his personal touches, his honesty, his humor, and the conversations they share with him.
“What I admire most about Duane is the kind of person he is. He is humble, honest, vulnerable, and incredibly compassionate. Every time he asked how I was doing, he truly wanted to know the answer. He listened. In a world where so many conversations stay on the surface, Duane made people feel seen.” -Alex Finken, Accurate CEO & Visionary, Las Vegas
Duane came to Accurate because someone saw his potential and opened a door. What happened after that was up to him. He has earned people’s trust through the decisions he makes, the work he performs, the word he keeps, and the way he treats those around him.
Alex is also careful to respect the parts of Duane’s life that belong to him alone.
“Duane has a story, and it’s not mine to tell. What I can say is that I am incredibly proud to know him. He reminds me that one opportunity, one person willing to believe in you, can change the course of a life. His journey is proof that our past does not have to define our future.” -Alex Finken, Accurate CEO & Visionary, Las Vegas
Accurate Customer Service Manager Dee Perez describes Duane as kind, humble, and willing to truly listen, making even ordinary conversations meaningful.
“Duane is respectful to everyone he meets and genuinely enjoys talking with people. He believes in treating others with dignity and keeping his word. His strength and genuine spirit really leave an impression on others.” –Dee Perez, Accurate Customer Service Manager, Las Vegas
Accurate’s Director of Workplace and Employee Experience Bonnie Miller remembers Alex personally taking her to meet Duane shortly after Bonnie joined the company.
“Alex told me, ‘He’s your kind of people.’ She wasn’t wrong. The first time we met, it felt like I’d known you forever.” –Bonnie Miller, Accurate Director of Workplace and Employee Experience, Las Vegas

Over the last four years, Duane has become much more than someone Bonnie works with; he has become her friend. Bonnie describes herself as the glass-half-full one and Duane as the more realistic one. She spent years trying to convince him to look on the bright side, while he kept her grounded in return. Looking back, she believes they both needed that balance.
“There is something I’ve always seen in you that I hope you’ve always been able to see in yourself—a gentle soul. You have a way of making people feel heard. When you’re talking to someone, you don’t just hear them; you listen. You make people feel like what they have to say matters, even if they’re just talking about everyday life. That’s a rare gift, and it’s one that every person lucky enough to know you has felt.” –Bonnie Miller, Accurate Director of Workplace and Employee Experience, Las Vegas
No matter how much time passes between a text, phone call, or visit, Bonnie and Duane always pick up exactly where they had left off. She thanks him for his friendship, his trust, every laugh and conversation, and the lessons they've shared.
“My life is better because you are part of it. I’m grateful that Alex knew you were ‘my kind of people.’ I love you, my friend.” –Bonnie Miller, Accurate Director of Workplace and Employee Experience, Las Vegas
Brandon Alvarez, Accurate’s Exterior Services Manager, worked with Duane for a shorter time but quickly saw the same qualities. Duane’s work ethic, kindness, and sincerity earn the respect of coworkers, managers, and the people in the workplaces he cares for. People continue to ask about him and share how much they miss seeing him.
“You are one of those rare people who leaves a lasting impression without even trying. You are appreciated far beyond the work you do. You bring a sense of warmth and sincerity that can’t be taught. The property simply isn’t the same without you.” –Brandon Alvarez, Accurate Exterior Services Manager, Las Vegas
Accurate crew member Anthony Wagner worked closely with Duane and values both his life wisdom and his wisecracks. He describes Duane as a kind-hearted, hardworking man who brings a much-needed laugh and make difficult days feel easier.
“I saw him show compassion when a person was in need, and that says it all. We are blessed with an awesome friend. I love you. We all love you.” –Anthony Wagner, Accurate Crew Member, Las Vegas
Duane’s reputation also reaches Accurate team members who have not had the opportunity to work with him personally. Area Supervisor Andrea Lopez says she has heard many heartfelt stories and funny memories from those who know him. Special Services Manager Al Tyler heard “nothing but great things” when speaking with people—from executives to receptionists—at several locations where Duane worked.

Letters from Friends
The people working in the customer offices Duane cared for know that he takes his work seriously. They also know his warmth, directness, humor, and the genuine interest he shows in other people.
Mark A. is the department manager for an Accurate customer and said simply, "Duane is a good man." Mark and his wife sometimes returned to the office after hockey games to retrieve one of their cars. What Duane may not have known was that they would intentionally come inside just to see him.
“Those few minutes always meant something to me. I enjoyed our conversations, your honesty, your work ethic, and your no-BS attitude. You were always genuine, and that’s a rare quality. I just want you to know you've made a difference in more lives than you probably realize. The way you carry yourself, treat people, and show up every day leaves an impression. We’re thinking about you, cheering you on, and grateful to call you our friend.” –Mark A., Department Manager for Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
That same sense of Duane’s absence appears throughout the messages. Marlyn M., another customer employee, told Duane that things are not the same without him there making sure everyone is taken care of. She misses his humor, their conversations, and the personality he brings with him. Most of all, she wants him to understand the place he holds in their lives.
“You are not just the person who came in to clean our office space. You are part of our dysfunctional family, and we are always thinking of you.” –Marlyn M., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Joey K. also writes about the impact of working with Duane and the friendship they share.
“Working around you over the years was a privilege. I’ll always remember your kindness, dedication, and the positive energy you brought every day. You’ve made a lasting impact, not only through your hard work but also through the friendship we built along the way. Thank you for all the laughs and genuine conversations.” –Joey K., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
For Trei B., meeting Duane a year ago changed what could have been an exhausting and isolating transition to working nights. He shares how each shift began with Duane waiting in the lobby with a fist bump and his familiar greeting of, “Homie, don’tcha know me?”
“[Duane is my] absolute favorite, extremely unique, grey-haired but young-spirited night owl.” –Trei B., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Trei says the ritual became “as dependable as the sunrise”—a small moment that made each night begin with a smile.
Their conversations have created a friendship built on trust, shared perspective, advice, and plenty of laughter. Despite differences in age, background, and life experience, Trei has come to understand that they have more in common than either might have expected. “We weren’t all that different after all,” Trei wrote to Duane.
Trei describes Duane as someone who never hesitates to be unapologetically himself, who speaks with intention and uplifts the people around him.
“Every conversation we shared left me with something to think about, a lesson to carry forward, and more often than not, a reason to laugh. I consider myself incredibly fortunate not only to have met such a remarkable man, but to have had the privilege of calling him my friend. Thank you for everything, Duane, and God bless. ~Your Homie, Trei.” –Trei B., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas

More letters arrived from another customer team, filled with the same themes: Duane’s dependability, sincerity, humor, kindness, and the difference his absence makes.
Carlyn L. wrote that things are simply not the same without seeing Duane and the “special touch” he gave to their workplace.
“You are truly one of the most genuine people I know. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. Miss you, my friend.” –Carlyn L., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Laura I. thanked Duane for years of kind and dependable care, but also for everything he gave beyond the job.
“You gave us real conversations, quick laughs, and genuine caring. Your sincerity and trustworthiness made this place feel like home. You are loved, appreciated, and in our thoughts. And to Duane's family: thank you for sharing him with us.” –Laura I., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Steve S. misses the many laughs, “old-school memories,” and conversations he and Duane shared. He told Duane that the workplace has not felt the same without him and that he will always value the connection they made.
“There are a lot of people who are rooting for you and wish you well. I will always value the connection we made. God bless you!” –Steve S., Senior Department Manager for Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Steve P. sent heartfelt prayers for Duane and his family. Writing on behalf of the “Transportation Ladies,” Wendy M.—whom Duane affectionately called “Boss Lady”—thanked him for always looking out for them.
“I appreciate you always taking the time to make sure we were all doing okay. I will always treasure the time we shared, and I thank you for making us feel special.” –Wendy M., Manager for Accurate Customer, Las Vegas

Devon Y. says the entire team cares deeply about Duane and feels fortunate to know him.
“You have always been so positive and kind to everyone on our team. We are grateful for the joy and warmth you have shared with us.” –Devon Y., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Some of the most meaningful memories are also the simplest. Faith R. remembers changing quickly after her shift before meeting friends for dinner. When she came out, Duane noticed and said, “Ohhh, you look nice!”
“It was so sweet and still makes me smile. Duane is always so kind, and I looked forward to seeing him when he came by." –Faith R., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Marcy C. remembers Duane keeping her company during closing shifts, always ready with something funny to say about life. The two also bonded over being 49ers fans.
“I always think of Duane as a very friendly, funny, smart, and all-around super cool guy. I appreciate everything he did for us.” –Marcy C., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Jeremy W. remembers that Duane always made time to say hello, ask how he was doing, encourage him about his future—and joke with him. One day, Duane commented on the unusually large drawers in Jeremy’s desk, sparking an ongoing inside joke and a new nickname for Jeremy: “Mr. Big Drawers.”
“Duane would always compliment me on how well I was doing and tell me that one day I would be running the place. He is truly a nice man to know and is constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Much love, Duane. ~‘Mr. Big Drawers.’” –Jeremy W., Employee of Accurate Customer, Las Vegas

Others sent prayers for comfort, peace, strength, and love to Duane and his family.
Across all of these messages, the same picture comes through: as Duane goes about his work, he pays attention to the details—especially the people around him. He checks on people, encourages them, makes them laugh, and makes them feel special. They feel Duane's absence from Accurate because his presence has meant so much to each of them.
More Than the Job
Janitorial work is necessary, practical work. Buildings have to be cleaned, the work has to be done well, and promises to customers must be kept. But the person doing that work is never “just” a janitor (the person completing tasks). Over time, greetings become familiar. Conversations deepen. Trust forms. People who might never have crossed paths otherwise begin to know one another and carry parts of one another’s stories.
Duane’s relationships with our customers' teams show what that can mean. He takes care of the places where he works, but he also pays attention to the people inside them. He listens. He remembers. He makes people laugh. He makes long nights feel less lonely and lets people know they have been seen. And they see him, too.
At Accurate, our purpose is taking care of people and places to support shared success. Duane’s story reminds us that the two cannot be separated. We care for places through people, and along the way, those people often become important to one another.

That is what it means to build belonging—one of our core values at Accurate. It is not a slogan. It's knowing that people notice when you are not there, knowing that you are seen and that you matter—and having people take the time to tell you. We build into one another, into our clients, their employees and customers, into the spaces we care for, and into our community. What is more important than that, no matter what business you are in or what work you do?
Duane, This Is for You
Duane, you are loved. You are respected, treasured, and deeply missed in the places where people expect to hear your voice, receive your fist bump, or stop for a conversation. We admire and value how you show up, how you carry yourself, your honesty, humor, and authenticity, the way you listen, and the way you make people feel seen. YOU MATTER, so very much.
You did not simply come to Accurate to perform a job. You are our colleague, our friend, and part of Our Accurate Family. Thank you for trusting us, for keeping your word, for taking care of people and places alongside us, and for showing us your heart. You are part of the places you care for and part of the lives of the people inside them. Their messages make that clear, and we're grateful that you've now read their words for yourself.
As Mark wrote:
“We just want him to know how much he means to all of us and that he’ll always be remembered as the Duane we’ve admired, respected, and laughed with over the years.” –Mark A., Department Manager for Accurate Customer, Las Vegas
Duane, we are grateful for you. We are better because you came through our doors. We love you.
