ISSA Advocacy Recap—Cleaning Week Proclaimed in Five States, City of Chicago

Welcome to the ISSA Advocacy Recap, our regular roundup of the latest public policy issues impacting the cleaning industry. This week’s recap touches on #NationalCleaningWeek, including ISSA’s virtual Clean Advocacy Summit on March 30-31, 2021, and more.

Five States, City of Chicago Issue Cleaning Week Proclamations Governors Kay Ivey, Michael Parson, Roy Cooper, Henry McMaster, and Greg Abbott, and Mayor Lori Lightfoot all recently proclaimed an official “Cleaning Week” in the States of Alabama, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas, as well as in the City of Chicago, respectively, as part of National Cleaning Week, March 28-April 3, 2021. “ISSA thanks Governors Ivey, Parson, Cooper, McMaster, and Abbott, as well as Mayor Lightfoot for recognizing the value of clean with these Cleaning Week proclamations,” said ISSA Director of Government Affairs John Nothdurft. “Now is a critical time to emphasize the importance of cleaning and recognize our frontline cleaning professionals who’ve worked continuously to combat the spread of COVID-19.” ISSA Announces Inaugural Outstanding Government Service Award Winners ISSA is proud to announce the recipients of the first ISSA Outstanding Government Service Awards presented in conjunction with the association’s Clean Advocacy Summit. The award recipients were selected by ISSA with input from its Government Affairs Advisory Committee. The recipients of this new award are U.S. Representative Darin LaHood (IL-18-R) and U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-D). “We thank Representative LaHood and Senator Sinema for their extraordinary support of small businesses, as well as for their leadership in sponsoring healthy and safe workplace tax credits. On behalf of more than 10,500 ISSA members, we congratulate them on their well-deserved awards,” said ISSA Executive Director John H. Barrett. ISSA Announces First-Ever Advocate of the Year Award Winners ISSA proudly announces the recipients of the first ISSA Advocate of the Year Awards presented as part of the association’s Clean Advocacy Summit. The award recipients were selected by ISSA with input from its Government Affairs Advisory Committee. The recipients of this new award are Kevin Monahan, President of Monahan Partners Inc., and Matt Vonachen, president and CEO of the Vonachen Group. “Kevin is being recognized for his crucial support of ISSA’s government affairs efforts, as well as for his strong advocacy for the impact tariffs are having on manufacturers of cleaning products and equipment,” said ISSA Director of Government Affairs John Nothdurft. “Matt was selected as our cleaning service recipient for his crucial assistance in relaunching ISSA’s government affairs efforts and instrumental work helping to get healthy and safe workplace tax credit legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.” Florida Sends COVID-19 Liability Protection Bill to Governor Florida businesses, governments, and healthcare providers will be protected from coronavirus lawsuits if they made a good effort to follow guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 under a bill the House sent to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, AP reported. In order for a lawsuit to move ahead, a plaintiff would have to show the defendant deliberately ignored guidelines. A plaintiff also would need a signed affidavit from a physician stating with reasonable certainty that injury or death caused by COVID-19 was a result of the defendant’s actions.
